Mauritius is small, and the reef goes almost all the way round it, which is why the water inside is flat and warm and the same colour in every photograph. What people underestimate is the food: Creole, French, Indian and Chinese cooking developed side by side here for two centuries, and the result is on every menu from the beach shack up.
Most of our Mauritius trips run five or six nights. It pairs well with a stop in Dubai or a week in the bush beforehand.
Where you’ll stay
St Regis Le Morne sits beneath Le Morne Brabant on the south-west corner, above white sand and coral.
LUX* Belle Mare and LUX* Grand Gaube are the east and north options: tropical minimalism at one, retro-chic between two coves at the other.
Le Méridien Ile Maurice runs along a kilometre of ivory sand in the north-west.
The Westin Turtle Bay is built around its wellness programme, in a sheltered bay.
Sugar Beach is the classic plantation-style resort, and the sunsets do the rest.
