Dubai Marina is a long channel of green water with some of the tallest residential towers in the world standing along both sides of it. Marina Walk follows the water for seven kilometres, lined with cafés, and from the promenade it is a pleasant evening stroll. From a boat it is a different place altogether: the towers go straight up above you, the moored yachts slide past at eye level, and the noise of the road disappears behind you.
The easy way is a shared yacht, leaving on a timetable for an hour, two or three, and the time of day sets the tone: a morning trip with breakfast, a midday one, a sunset run, or an evening sailing with a barbecue going on deck. You step aboard, find a seat, and the crew do the rest. Most boats have a cabin below and seating on deck in both sun and shade, and the deck is where you want to be. A private boat is the same trip with your own people and your own timing, and for a birthday it is worth the difference.
The route belongs to the operator, but the shape is usually the same. Out through the mouth of the Marina you pass the beach at JBR and the big wheel on Bluewaters Island. Then you are on open water, the towers of the Marina and JBR line up behind the boat, and the Palm spreads out along the coast. Longer trips carry on towards the Burj Al Arab, the sail-shaped hotel standing on its own island. It is closed for restoration until late 2027, but from the water it is still the shape everyone photographs.
Pick the hour carefully. Morning light is clear and flat, and in winter it can be cool on the water, so bring a layer. Sunset is the slot everyone wants, with the glass on the towers turning orange as you come back in. After dark the Marina lights up around you and it becomes a different trip again. In the summer months the middle of the day is hard work on deck, so we steer you to the ends of it.
It is mostly a daytime trip, and it makes a good pair with a dhow dinner on another night: the same stretch of water, at dinner speed, with the lights on.
Good to know
- Sunglasses, sun cream and a hat. Even with shade, the deck is bright.
- Tell us about birthdays and anniversaries when we book. A private boat is a different trip at a different scale.
- Departure points vary between operators and are not always where you expect. We confirm yours in writing with the transfer.
- The Burj Al Arab is closed for restoration until late 2027. You still see it from the water, but you cannot go in.
- If anyone is prone to seasickness, a tablet before boarding and a seat on the open deck both help.
- If you only want the coastline from the water, the public ferry from Dubai Marina Mall runs up to the old town. It is a good trip in its own right.
Departure points, routes, trip lengths, what is served on board, shared or private arrangements, life-jacket and age rules, swimming stops, the drinks policy and cancellation for wind or sea state are set by the operator and change. We confirm what applies to your dates in writing before you pay anything.
Ten minutes out, the city you have been driving around all week lines up behind the boat in one long row.
