Ask a search box for Nairobi to Ouagadougou and watch it hesitate. West Africa is where online booking quietly stops working: the fares exist and the routings exist, but they need somebody to put them in the right order, and no screen is going to do that for you.

ASKY is usually part of the answer. It is a pan-African carrier hubbed at Lomé in Togo, with Ethiopian Airlines behind it as both shareholder and strategic partner, and West and Central Africa is its patch: the cities that turn up on a conference invitation, a posting or a family obligation rather than in a holiday brochure.

The useful part is that it comes to us. ASKY flies into Nairobi itself, nonstop to Lomé, which turns the hard half of a West African journey into one sector and a hub. What happens after the hub is still hand work: the order of the sectors, and the change that survives contact with a real airport, issued as one journey instead of two bookings that have never met.

If you are going west and the internet has told you it cannot be done, send us the city and the week. This is the kind of routing the desk enjoys.

Questions people put to us about this airline

Baggage, alliances and how the ticket actually gets issued. The answers come from what the airline itself publishes, and we confirm what applies to your own fare before you pay.

What baggage allowance comes with an ASKY ticket?

ASKY sets the free allowance by cabin rather than by fare: two checked pieces either way, heavier ones in Business. ASKY Club members above the entry level carry an extra piece, and it gets heavier with the level. The part that catches people is where the rest is paid: beyond the free allowance, excess is settled at the ASKY office at the airport, at check-in. On a West African routing built out of more than one carrier the allowance for each sector is a real question rather than a formality, so we confirm it in writing with the quote.

Is ASKY in an alliance, and can I earn anything?

No alliance. Its own programme is the ASKY Club, where status is earned on miles or on the number of flights flown, whichever you reach first, across Silver, Gold and Black above the entry level. Miles go on award tickets, upgrades or excess baggage, and they expire after four years if they are not used. On this kind of journey the connection is usually worth more than the credit, and the connection is where we spend the time.

How does an ASKY ticket get issued here?

Send the city and the week, even if the internet has told you it cannot be done. We work out the hub, the order of the sectors and the change that survives contact with a real airport, then issue the whole thing as one journey rather than two bookings that have never met. The fare and its rules go to you in writing, and the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent. How ticketing works here has the rest.

However this journey is routed, the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent: est. 1994, two offices you can walk into, and a person who answers when a connection drops at six in the morning. How ticketing works here (what happens after you ask, and the questions people put to us before they commit) is set out in full on the flights page.
