The short hop to Kigali: the gorilla-trekking door, and a connector on across East, Central and West Africa.
Hub, alliance and route facts checked against what the airline itself publishes, September 2026. Source: rwandair.com
Nairobi to Kigali is a short hop, and for one particular kind of trip it is the leg everything else hangs on. Gorilla permits are dated, named and unforgiving. The flight that delivers you to the trek has to be the one that works, not the one that looked best on a screen at eleven at night.
So we ticket the flight against the permit dates and the drive, because all three have to agree with each other. A permit is bought for a named day. Move the flight and you have not moved the permit, which is a conversation we would much rather have before the booking than after it. Rwanda is where most of these journeys are going.
Kigali is a useful connector in its own right, too. RwandAir carries on from there across East, Central and West Africa and further, so the hop can be the first leg of something with no gorillas in it at all. If your map runs west and the routings are refusing to assemble themselves, this is often the airline that makes them work.
Questions people put to us about this airline
Baggage, alliances and how the ticket actually gets issued. The answers come from what the airline itself publishes, and we confirm what applies to your own fare before you pay.
What baggage allowance comes with a RwandAir ticket?
RwandAir publishes a piece allowance: two checked bags of 23kg each in Economy and in Premium Economy, three in Business, with one cabin bag of up to 10kg at 55 by 38 by 20cm. Johannesburg is the exception, where cabin baggage drops to 7kg. On a gorilla trip the permit and the drive matter more than the bags, but the bags are what people ask about first.
Is RwandAir in an alliance, and can I earn anything?
No alliance. Its own programme is DreamMiles, which runs four tiers from Emerald up through Silver and Gold to Diamond. Awards and cabin upgrades come out of miles at every tier, and the free baggage rises with the tier: 10kg at Silver, a whole extra piece above that. On this trip the sequence is worth more than the miles: the permit is bought for a named day, and the flight has to agree with it. Move the flight and you have not moved the permit.
How does a RwandAir ticket get issued here?
Send the permit dates first, then the flights. We ticket against the permit and the drive, because all three have to agree with each other and a permit is bought for a named day. The fare and its rules go to you in writing before anything is paid, and the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent. If a leg slips, the consultant who issued it is the one who fixes it. How ticketing works here has the rest.

However this journey is routed, the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent: est. 1994, two offices you can walk into, and a person who answers when a connection drops at six in the morning. How ticketing works here (what happens after you ask, and the questions people put to us before they commit) is set out in full on the flights page.
