Where they take you from Nairobi

Nairobi is their hub, so this is where the network starts rather than where it carries on. The underlined places have a page here. We plan the trip, not just the flight.

Nairobi is the hub. Each line is a city the airline sells from Wilson on its own network.

  • Amboseli
  • Samburu
  • Diani
  • Lamu

Safarilink flies from Wilson, which is the airport the safari circuit actually runs on. The Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Diani and Lamu are scheduled services rather than charters, so a camp booked for a Tuesday has a flight on the Tuesday, and you are buying a seat rather than an aeroplane.

The part that is easy to miss is the shape of the timetable. The inbound services meet each other at Wilson, so a passenger off the Amboseli flight can carry straight on to the Mara, or north to Nanyuki, Lewa, Loisaba and Samburu, or wait a little and go to the coast. Camp to camp, in other words, without losing a day coming back through Nairobi to start again.

Bags are the thing people underestimate. The limit is strict, it is per person, it counts what you are carrying on, and it has to be a soft bag, because the holds are small and the wrong shape for a suitcase. The figure is in the answers below. Pack to it rather than around it.

We ticket the flights against the camp nights on one booking, because the two have to agree and a bush strip is not the place to improvise. Flying safaris is the longer version of why that matters.

Where we use it

These sectors turn up most often in the journeys we build. Each destination page has the rest of the trip on it.

Questions people put to us about this airline

Baggage, alliances and how the ticket actually gets issued. The answers come from what the airline itself publishes, and we confirm what applies to your own fare before you pay.

What baggage allowance comes with a Safarilink ticket?

Safarilink publishes a hard number and means it: 15kg a person, inclusive of hand baggage, in soft bags. The coast and the regional routes are the exception at 20kg, which covers Zanzibar, Kisumu, Diani, Lamu, Malindi, Entebbe and Mombasa. An infant not paying for a seat carries no allowance at all. The soft-bag rule is not fussiness: the holds are small and an awkward shape, and a rigid case will not go in. If the rest of your trip needs a bigger bag, it stays in Nairobi.

Is Safarilink in an alliance, and can I earn anything?

No alliance. Its own programme is Safari Bonus: points on scheduled Safarilink flights, scaled by the fare and the class of travel rather than by distance, redeemable for award tickets across its own network once you have enough of them. Discounted and complimentary tickets earn nothing, points can be transferred to another registered member, and an award ticket is requested from the programme with your membership number rather than booked online. Taxes are still payable. On a safari the timetable matters more than the points, but the number belongs on the booking either way.

How does a Safarilink ticket get issued here?

The camp nights come first. We take the confirmed nights, work out which strip serves them, and ticket the flights against them on the same booking rather than leaving you to reconcile two. The international arrival sets the first leg out of Nairobi and the last one home. The fare and its rules come to you in writing, and the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent, so a camp that moves is one message to the person who issued it. How ticketing works here has the rest.

However this journey is routed, the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent: est. 1994, two offices you can walk into, and a person who answers when a connection drops at six in the morning. How ticketing works here (what happens after you ask, and the questions people put to us before they commit) is set out in full on the flights page.
