Destination

South Africa& Victoria Falls

A world in one country, and Victoria Falls next door.

South Africa earns the cliché: you can have a Big Five morning and a wine-estate lunch in the same week without either feeling rushed. Cape Town sits between Table Mountain and two oceans. Kruger runs for 350 kilometres. The Garden Route joins forests, lagoons and the Klein Karoo’s caves along one coastal road.

North of it, on the Zambezi, Victoria Falls does the thing no photograph manages, and Livingstone is the side we send people to.

Where you’ll go

Cape Town. Table Mountain by cable car, Robben Island, Bo-Kaap, the V&A Waterfront, and Boulders Beach for the penguins.

The Cape Winelands. Stellenbosch for Cape Dutch streets and estates; Franschhoek for the wine tram and the kitchens.

The Garden Route. Knysna’s lagoon and Featherbed reserve, Tsitsikamma’s suspension bridge and gorges, Oudtshoorn’s ostrich farms and the Cango Caves.

Kruger and Mpumalanga. Big Five game drives, then the Panorama Route: Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

Hermanus. Southern right whales close to shore between June and November, and the Hemel-en-Aarde valley behind the town.

Victoria Falls, Zambia. The rainforest walk, a Zambezi sunset cruise, and rafting below the gorge for those who want it.

Practical notes

Draft: awaiting owner verification. Indicative only; confirmed in writing with your quote.

  • Whale season at Hermanus is a seasonal window, not a guarantee.
  • Our South African itineraries are quoted on the same route at three grades: budget, semi-luxury and luxury.
  • Victoria Falls itineraries cross into Zambia; entry requirements differ from South Africa’s and we confirm both.

Tipping
Here tipping is part of how people are paid rather than a bonus. Around a tenth of a restaurant bill is the common instinct, car guards get coins on the way out, and your guide is a separate matter altogether.
Tap water
Long a point of pride and safe from the tap in the big cities, though supply and quality vary town to town. Ask your hotel about the local supply.

Comparing countries? The full table puts every destination we plan side by side, and when to go does the same for the months.

Getting there

The flights for this trip are ticketed at the same desk as the rest of it: 66 airlines, all ticketed in Nairobi, whatever the routing turns out to be. Ask for the fare when you ask for the trip, and one person holds both.
