Vietnam holidaysfrom Kenya

The dragon's heart, north to south, in six or nine days.

Vietnam rewards the traveller who slows down. Hanoi’s old quarter is best walked at seven in the morning, before the heat, when the pavement kitchens are at their busiest. Ha Long Bay is worth an overnight rather than a day trip. Da Nang is the easy middle, a beach city that kept its own character. Ho Chi Minh City is the opposite of all of it, and the reason you fly home tired.

Visa access is straightforward for most passports, which is why Vietnam has become one of the easier long-haul holidays to organise from Nairobi.

Where you’ll go

Hanoi. Old-world streets, hidden temples, and the country’s best case for slowing down.

Ha Long. Limestone islands, a boat, and coastal villages behind the postcard.

Da Nang. Laid-back, modern, and a short drive from Hoi An’s lantern-lit lanes.

Ho Chi Minh City. Ambition at street level, with the war history museums that give the rest of the trip its context.

Our Vietnam itineraries

Three routes, all draft and all tailorable: six days for the cities, eight days adding Ha Long and the coast, nine days for the version with room to breathe.

Practical notes

Draft: awaiting owner verification. Indicative only; confirmed in writing with your quote.

  • Vietnam is a north-to-south country. The internal flights matter more than the road transfers, and we book them first.
  • The best weather depends on which end you are in. Tell us your dates and we will tell you which way round to travel.
  • Vietnamese entry requirements differ by passport and change; we confirm yours before ticketing.

Tipping
Not a Vietnamese habit, though tourism has picked it up. Guides and drivers on a multi-day route are the ones who notice; leave it small, and in cash.
Tap water
Bottled. Hotels supply it and refill stations are common in the tourist towns. Ask your hotel before you drink from the tap.

Comparing countries? The full table puts every destination we plan side by side, and when to go does the same for the months.

Getting there

The flights for this trip are ticketed at the same desk as the rest of it: 66 airlines, all ticketed in Nairobi, whatever the routing turns out to be. Ask for the fare when you ask for the trip, and one person holds both.

Why go

Vietnam in five lines

  1. Hanoi's old quarter, its temples and its coffee
  2. Ha Long Bay, by boat, overnight
  3. Da Nang and the central coast
  4. Ho Chi Minh City, fast and getting faster
  5. Street food as a reason to travel, not a footnote
