Two zebras and a foal grazing on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, the crater wall behind them

Experience

The Ngorongoro Crater

A day inside a collapsed volcano, on a floor two thousand feet below the rim you slept on, with more animals per square mile than anywhere else you will drive in East Africa.

How hardLightSitting in a vehicle on rough tracks, all day
SeasonYear-roundGreen on the floor for much of the year; the rim is cold at night

You sleep on the rim. In the dark it is only cold and quiet, and then at breakfast the mist lifts off the caldera and the floor appears two thousand feet below you, flat and green and already moving.

The descent road takes you down the wall in switchbacks and drops you onto grassland ringed by its own horizon. Everything is contained. Lion on the short grass, elephant bulls in the fever trees, buffalo standing in the wet, flamingo working the soda lake in a pink line. Black rhino live down here as well, which is why a lot of people come, though seeing one is luck rather than a plan.

The density is the point. You do not drive for an hour between sightings, because the animals cannot spread out any further than the crater wall lets them. It makes for a very full day and a slightly unreal one: a game drive with edges you can see.

Go early. The floor is finite, every vehicle in the area wants the same morning, and a good sighting at nine has a queue behind it by half past.

Good to know

  • The conservation authority sets entry and vehicle charges and the hours vehicles may spend on the floor, and revises both. We confirm what applies to your dates when we book.
  • The rim is high and genuinely cold after dark. Lodges have fires; you still want a fleece.
  • Most people pair the crater with a night or two in the Serengeti, since you drive past the gate anyway.
  • It is a vehicle day from start to finish. If you want to be on your feet, the Ngorongoro highlands walk out of the crater’s rim villages is the better half of the same stop.

Crater entry and vehicle fees, the descent-road rules, the permitted hours on the crater floor and the current picnic-site arrangements are all set by the conservation authority and revised periodically. We confirm what applies to your dates in writing before you pay anything.

You come over the lip in mist and the whole floor is below you, already lit.

Where to do it

Where we arrange the ngorongoro crater

Start from the destination, and we will build the days around this.

Questions we are actually asked

How long do you spend on the crater floor?
Most of a day, starting early. The authority sets the hours vehicles may be down there and has changed them before, so your guide plans the descent around the current rule rather than a published timetable. We confirm what applies to your dates when we book.
What will we actually see?
Lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and hyena are close to routine on the floor, and flamingo work the soda lake in numbers that shift week to week. Black rhino live down there too, which is the reason many people come, but they are wild animals in a large caldera and nobody promises them.
Is it crowded?
It can be. The floor is finite and every vehicle in the area wants the same morning, so sightings draw a line of cars. Staying on the rim and dropping in at first light is the difference between a busy day and a quiet one.
Where do you stay?
On the rim, mostly, where the lodges look straight down into the caldera and the temperature drops hard after dark, so pack a fleece. There are simpler options further out towards Karatu if the rim lodges are full or the budget wants managing.
What does it cost to go in?
The conservation authority charges per person and per vehicle, and revises the tariff from time to time. We quote the figure that applies to your dates in writing rather than publish a number here that will be wrong by next season.
