A shoebill standing on the edge of a Mabamba swamp channel

Experience

Shoebill Tracking

A morning in a canoe through the papyrus at Mabamba Swamp, close to Entebbe, looking for a prehistoric-looking grey bird that nobody can promise you will find.

Mabamba is a papyrus wetland on the Lake Victoria shore, near enough to Entebbe to sit either side of a flight. You go early, in a small canoe with low sides, and the boatman kills the engine at the mouth of a channel so the whole thing happens at the speed of poling.

The bird you came for is grey, chest-high and carries a bill like a wooden clog. It stands in the papyrus without moving, and you go past it twice before the guide points. Sometimes it is not there at all. This is a wild bird in a large swamp, and the guides will tell you straight when a morning is going that way.

What you get regardless is the swamp: jacanas walking on lily pads, malachite kingfishers on the reed stems, herons lifting out of the channels ahead of the boat, and the villages at the edge whose community fees are the reason the papyrus is still standing.

Good to know

  • No one promises a shoebill. The local guides know which channels have held birds recently, and blank mornings still happen.
  • Early starts are the norm: calmer water, more active birds, better light.
  • Canoes are small and take a handful of people. Life jackets are standard; operators set their own rules on young children and we check them.
  • Community fees, canoe rates and transfer arrangements are set locally and change. We confirm current terms in writing.

Mabamba community fees, canoe and guide rates, transfer arrangements from Entebbe or Kampala and any boat-capacity rules are set locally and change. We confirm what applies to your dates in writing before you pay anything.

Where to do it

Where we arrange shoebill tracking

Start from the destination, and we will build the days around this.

Questions we are actually asked

What is a shoebill?
A tall grey wading bird with an enormous hooked bill, found in papyrus swamps in a handful of African countries. It hunts by standing still for long stretches, which is both why it is hard to spot and why it looks, in photographs, like something from a much older world.
Will we see one?
Nobody can promise it. Mabamba is one of the more reliable places to look and the local guides know which channels have held birds recently, but it is a wild bird in a large swamp and blank mornings happen. Go for the swamp and treat the bird as the prize.
Where is Mabamba and when do we go?
A wetland on the Lake Victoria shore, on the same side of the water as Entebbe, which makes it workable either side of an international flight. Early morning is the standard start: the birds are more active and the water is calm.
What is the boat like?
A small motorised canoe with low sides, taking a handful of people, poled or nudged quietly through channels cut in the papyrus. It is calm water rather than open lake. Life jackets are standard and we check the operator's rules on young children.
Who guides it?
Local boatmen and bird guides from the villages at the swamp edge, who track where the birds have been feeding. The community fee that comes with the trip is part of why the swamp is protected rather than drained, which is worth knowing while you sit in it.
