Experience
Sunset Cruise
Out for the last hour of light with the engine off and a drink in your hand. This close to the equator the sun does not linger, which is rather the point of watching it.
By late afternoon the wind has usually dropped and the sea has gone glassy in patches. That is when the boats go out, not far, just far enough that the land stops mattering and you can see the whole western horizon without a headland in the way.
The engine goes off once you are settled. Somebody hands round drinks. The granite behind you turns the colour it only turns at this hour, orange going to rose going to something the camera will not manage, and the hills of Mahé stack themselves into flat blue layers the further away they get.
Four degrees south of the equator, the sun does not do the long European fade. It comes down at a visible rate, sits on the water for a moment, and goes. The last two minutes of it silence a boat of strangers more reliably than any speech. Then the sky behind you keeps working for a while, and fruit bats start crossing overhead on their way to wherever they feed, which is the detail everyone remembers afterwards and nobody was told about.
It is a small thing to book and it improves a week more than its size suggests. On an anniversary or a first night it is worth taking the boat privately, not for the boat, but because the evening then runs at your pace rather than a schedule’s. It sits naturally alongside a honeymoon week, and against a full day’s catamaran sailing it is the low-effort version of the same pleasure.
Good to know
- Sailings go out from Mahé and Praslin, and the departure point is set by the operator rather than by your hotel. Transfers are arranged with the booking.
- Departure is timed to the sunset and shifts through the year. We confirm the time close to your dates.
- Take a layer. It is warm on the beach and cooler on the water once the sun is off it.
- What is included at the bar varies by boat. We confirm it in writing rather than letting you find out.
- Private charters need booking further ahead than shared ones, particularly around a date that matters.
- A cloudy evening is still a good evening on the water, but nobody can promise you the sky.
Departure times, what drinks and canapés include, boat sizes, whether a sailing is shared or private and every fare are set by the boat operator and shift through the year. We confirm what applies to your dates in writing before you pay anything.
The light goes quickly here, and everyone on the boat stops talking for the last of it.
