Experience
Bungee from the Victoria Falls Bridge
A bungee jump off the old railway bridge between Zimbabwe and Zambia, into the gorge below the falls, with the Zambezi a long way down and the spray hanging upstream.
The Victoria Falls Bridge went up in 1905, a steel arch thrown across the gorge just below the falls to carry the railway north. It still carries trains, cars and people on foot, and near the middle of it there is a platform where people jump off.
The bridge is also the border. Zimbabwe’s post sits at one end and Zambia’s at the other, and the jump happens in the stretch between them, so your passport comes with you even though you never really leave. The formalities are the slowest part of the morning, and the part nobody photographs.
Then it is the harness, the briefing and the walk out onto the platform. The crew talk you through every step, check the equipment and bring you to the edge, and then it is just you, your toes over the lip, and the gorge. The drop is well over a hundred metres: the Zambezi comes up at you, green and white at the bottom of the gorge, and the rope takes over well before it arrives. You can go alone, or in tandem with someone, holding on.
After the bouncing stops, the crew bring you back up to the bridge, and you walk off the platform on legs that are not entirely your own. It takes a while for the grin to wear off.
Physically it asks very little: no swimming, no climb out of the gorge, no fitness test. What it asks for is the step, and that is entirely about nerve. Some people stand on the platform and decide not to, and nobody on the bridge thinks less of them for it. The operator sets a minimum age and a weight range, and we confirm both before booking.
If you want the gorge without the drop, the swing and zipline run from the rim nearby. The sunset cycle ride ends on this same bridge, with the falls and the evening light rather than a rope.
Good to know
- Take your passport. The bridge sits between the two border posts, and you cannot reach it without passing one.
- The operator sets a minimum age and a weight range. We confirm both, and any medical exclusions, before booking.
- Tell us in advance about heart, back, neck or eye conditions, high blood pressure and pregnancy. Operators exclude some of these.
- Empty your pockets before you are harnessed. Anything loose leaves you on the way down.
- Photographs and video are usually available from the operator. Your own phone stays on the bridge.
Listed daily on request from 09:00, allowing two to three hours including border formalities; the jump is given as 111 metres, ending about 10 metres above the river, solo or tandem. Passports are required because the bridge lies between the two border posts; the gate-pass arrangement on each side, the operator's minimum age and weight range, and any medical exclusions are to be confirmed. We confirm what applies to your dates in writing before you pay anything.
Nobody on the bridge will hurry you, and nobody can take the last step for you.
