Tanzania's flag carrier: the nonstop hop to Dar es Salaam, and the domestic web that reaches Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro.

Where they take you from Nairobi

The nonstop out of JKIA, and where their own network carries on beyond it. The underlined places have a page here. We plan the trip, not just the flight.

The nonstop out of NairobiOnward on the airline's own network

Air Tanzania comes up at this desk for reasons of geography rather than loyalty. Nairobi to Dar es Salaam is a nonstop hop, and from Dar the flag carrier’s own domestic web carries on to Zanzibar and to Kilimanjaro, which happen to be the two places a Tanzania trip usually needs next.

That is the shape of most of the journeys we build down there: north to the parks first and the island afterwards, or the other way round if the rains say so. Put those legs on the home carrier and they connect to each other instead of to a spreadsheet. Tanzania and Zanzibar are where they end up.

The legs either side of a safari are the ones that go wrong quietly. A light aircraft out of a park strip, a bag that has to make a change nobody checked, a morning game drive that runs long because the cats finally showed up. We ticket the international sector and the domestic ones together, so when the day moves there is one consultant holding the whole booking rather than three holding a third of it each.

Questions people put to us about this airline

Baggage, alliances and how the ticket actually gets issued. The answers come from what the airline itself publishes, and we confirm what applies to your own fare before you pay.

What baggage allowance comes with an Air Tanzania ticket?

Air Tanzania publishes its checked allowance by region. On the Nairobi sector and everywhere else inside Africa it is two pieces of 23kg in both Economy and Business, and Africa to another continent adds a third piece in Business. Domestic flights carry one bag, 23kg in Economy and 30kg in Business. The number that catches people on a safari is none of those: the light aircraft into the parks and out to the islands carry far less and usually want a soft bag, so we check the tightest limit on your itinerary rather than the most generous.

Is there an alliance or a miles programme?

No alliance. Its own programme is Twiga Miles, whose Gold Serengeti tier publishes 10kg of free baggage every time a member flies on an Air Tanzania operated flight, priority bag tags and priority check-in at Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar. On the journeys we build down there the miles are rarely the useful part: what matters is that the international sector and the domestic ones sit on one booking, so when a game drive runs long there is one consultant holding the whole thing.

How does an Air Tanzania ticket get issued here?

Send the shape of the safari rather than the flight numbers. We ticket the international sector and the domestic ones together so they answer to each other, and we check the tightest baggage limit on the itinerary rather than the most generous. The fare and its rules go to you in writing, the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent, and when the day moves there is one consultant holding the whole booking. How ticketing works here has the rest.

However this journey is routed, the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent: est. 1994, two offices you can walk into, and a person who answers when a connection drops at six in the morning. How ticketing works here (what happens after you ask, and the questions people put to us before they commit) is set out in full on the flights page.
