The other Wilson carrier, and the older one: the same parks as the rest, plus the northern strips at Nanyuki, Lewa, Meru and Samburu.

Where they take you from Nairobi

Nairobi is their hub, so this is where the network starts rather than where it carries on.

Nairobi is the hub. Each line is a city the airline sells from Wilson on its own network.
  • Maasai Mara
  • Amboseli
  • Samburu
  • Nanyuki
  • Lewa
  • Meru

Airkenya is the other answer at Wilson, and the older of the two. It says it was the first airline to fly into the Maasai Mara, and it still flies there, along with Amboseli and a string of strips further north.

The north is where it differs from Safarilink. Nanyuki, Lewa Downs, Meru, Loisaba and Samburu are all on its own scheduled network out of Wilson, which puts Meru National Park and the Lewa conservancy inside an ordinary itinerary rather than behind a charter quote or a long drive.

Choosing between the two carriers is not a loyalty question and we do not treat it as one. It is a schedule question. The camp has an arrival window and a departure window, the strip has a service, and one of the two fits the week better than the other. Often enough the answer is one carrier out and the other back.

Two things the timetable will tell you and a booking screen will not: most of these services need a minimum number of passengers per strip to operate, and some of them run to a seasonal calendar. Both are worth knowing before the camp is confirmed, which is why we read them before we quote.

Where we use it

These sectors turn up most often in the journeys we build. Each destination page has the rest of the trip on it.

Questions people put to us about this airline

Baggage, alliances and how the ticket actually gets issued. The answers come from what the airline itself publishes, and we confirm what applies to your own fare before you pay.

What baggage allowance comes with an Airkenya ticket?

Airkenya publishes one figure for everything it flies: 15kg a person in soft-sided bags, on all services. Hand baggage is not extra. A personal item may not go over 5kg and counts inside the same 15kg, so a daypack is part of the allowance rather than alongside it. If you arrive with a rigid case, the terminal sells soft bags, which tells you how firmly the rule is applied. Excess is charged by the kilo, and a freight seat can be bought for a genuinely large load.

Is Airkenya in an alliance, and can I earn anything?

No alliance, and no frequent flyer programme: Airkenya publishes neither, so there is nothing to collect here. What it publishes instead is worth more on a safari. Its timetable sets a minimum number of passengers per airstrip before a service operates at all, raises that minimum in the high season, and stands the cross-border Arusha service down for two windows in the year. None of that shows in a search box, which is why a bush itinerary is read against the timetable before a camp is confirmed.

How does an Airkenya ticket get issued here?

Send the camp nights and the international arrival, in that order. The nights fix which strip and which day, the arrival fixes the first leg out of Nairobi, and we ticket the bush sectors on the same booking as the rest so nothing rests on two records agreeing by luck. The fare and its rules come to you in writing before anything is paid, and the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent. How ticketing works here has the rest.

However this journey is routed, the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent: est. 1994, two offices you can walk into, and a person who answers when a connection drops at six in the morning. How ticketing works here (what happens after you ask, and the questions people put to us before they commit) is set out in full on the flights page.
