Where they take you from Nairobi

The nonstop out of JKIA, and where their own network carries on beyond it. The underlined places have a page here. We plan the trip, not just the flight.

The nonstop out of NairobiOnward on the airline's own network

For a great many journeys out of Nairobi, Emirates is the first thing we price. Dubai is a nonstop from JKIA and a hinge rather than an endpoint: from there, Asia, Australia and the Americas are one further stop, a simpler sentence than most long-haul routings can manage, and simple is what holds together when a leg runs late.

It belongs to no alliance and does not appear to miss one. The network does that work on its own.

It is also how our own Dubai trips fly. When the flight and the hotel and the transfer come off one desk, the hotel knows what time you land, and when the flight moves the transfer moves with it. That is the argument for booking a trip rather than assembling one out of six tabs.

Where Emirates is worth arguing about is the return. Long-haul return fares carry rules that only show themselves on the day you need to change something, and the stopover versions are worth understanding before you choose your dates rather than after. Ask us for both and we will tell you what each one locks you into.

Where we use it

These sectors turn up most often in the journeys we build. Each destination page has the rest of the trip on it.

Questions people put to us about this airline

Baggage, alliances and how the ticket actually gets issued. The answers come from what the airline itself publishes, and we confirm what applies to your own fare before you pay.

What baggage allowance comes with an Emirates ticket out of Nairobi?

Emirates counts a journey starting in Africa in bags rather than kilos: the piece concept, not the weight concept it uses on most of its other routes. Each checked bag carries its own limit, 23kg in Economy and Premium Economy and 32kg in Business and First, and none may exceed 150cm once length, width and height are added together. How many pieces the fare includes follows the cabin and the fare type, so we read it off the fare we are quoting rather than from a table.

Emirates is in no alliance. Does that cost me anything?

Rarely, and it is worth saying plainly: Emirates belongs to no alliance, so an alliance card from elsewhere has nothing to credit to here. Its own programme is Emirates Skywards, and because a journey from here is counted in pieces, the published tier benefit is a bag rather than kilos: Platinum and Gold members get one checked piece above the ticketed limit, 23kg in Economy and 32kg in Business and First. Silver's extra belongs to the weight-concept routes and does not reach this one. If you hold the card, give us the number before we issue.

How does an Emirates ticket get issued here?

Send the route and roughly when. We come back with the fare and its rules in writing, including what the return locks you into, which on a long-haul fare is the part that only shows itself on the day you need to change something. The ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent. If the hotel and the transfer are with us too, they move when the flight moves, which is the whole argument for booking a trip rather than assembling one. How ticketing works here has the rest.

The airline changes; the desk does not

However this journey is routed, the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent: est. 1994, two offices you can walk into, and a person who answers when a connection drops at six in the morning. How ticketing works here (what happens after you ask, and the questions people put to us before they commit) is set out in full on the flights page.
