Kenya Airways' low-cost arm out of JKIA: the Coast and the lake, on a fare that has to be read before it is bought.

Where they take you from Nairobi

Nairobi is their hub, so this is where the network starts rather than where it carries on.

Nairobi is the hub. Each line is a city the airline sells from JKIA on its own network.
  • Mombasa
  • Diani
  • Malindi
  • Lamu
  • Kisumu
  • Eldoret

Jambojet is Kenya Airways’ low-cost arm, and it flies from JKIA rather than Wilson. That one fact does more work than anything else on this page. If you land in Nairobi on a long-haul ticket and carry on to the Coast the same day, the onward leg goes from the airport you are already standing in.

The network is the Coast and the lake: Mombasa, Diani, Malindi and Lamu on one side, Kisumu and Eldoret on the other. For a great many Kenya itineraries that is the whole domestic requirement, and it holds together with an international arrival without a taxi across the city in the middle of it.

The fare is where a low-cost airline earns its reputation, in both directions. The basic fare buys a seat and a cabin bag and nothing else. The bundled fare adds a hold bag, a seat and one date change. Which of the two you want depends on the trip, and the moment to work that out is before you pay rather than at the check-in desk.

One thing to watch. If your next leg is a light aircraft into the parks, that one goes from Wilson, and the two airports sit on opposite sides of Nairobi. Safarilink and the other Wilson carriers are a transfer away, not a connection.

Where we use it

These sectors turn up most often in the journeys we build. Each destination page has the rest of the trip on it.

Questions people put to us about this airline

Baggage, alliances and how the ticket actually gets issued. The answers come from what the airline itself publishes, and we confirm what applies to your own fare before you pay.

What baggage allowance comes with a Jambojet ticket?

Jambojet sells the hold separately. Every fare carries one cabin bag of up to 10kg at 55 by 35 by 25cm, and the basic fare carries nothing beyond it: the airline publishes no checked allowance and sells hold bags by weight band instead, up to two a passenger. A cabin bag inside the weight but over those dimensions goes to the hold at a charge. Its bundled fare includes a hold bag, a seat and one date change. We price the bundle against the bags you are actually carrying.

Is Jambojet in an alliance, and does the Kenya Airways card work on it?

No alliance, and the Kenya Airways card is a separate scheme. Jambojet is a Kenya Airways subsidiary but runs its own programme, JM Rewards, which you enter at Emerald on a first confirmed booking and climb to Ruby and then Diamond on points or on sectors flown. The benefit worth knowing sits at the top: Diamond carries priority baggage handling, half off baggage rates bought at the airport, and a preferred seat at no cost. Whichever number you hold, it belongs on the booking before we issue.

How does a Jambojet ticket get issued here?

Send the international arrival first, then the nights. The inbound long-haul sets the earliest the domestic leg can leave and the hotel sets the latest, and between those two there is usually one flight that works rather than three that nearly do. We come back with the fare and its rules in writing, and the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent. If the arrival moves, the consultant who issued the domestic leg is the one who moves it. How ticketing works here has the rest.

However this journey is routed, the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent: est. 1994, two offices you can walk into, and a person who answers when a connection drops at six in the morning. How ticketing works here (what happens after you ask, and the questions people put to us before they commit) is set out in full on the flights page.
