Frankfurt is the nonstop, and for a good number of the people who ask us for it the appeal is German-speaking Europe rather than Europe in general: a university place, a conference, a hospital appointment, a daughter who moved to Stuttgart four years ago.
Lufthansa calls Frankfurt and Munich its hubs, and the two behave differently. Frankfurt is the wider one, with more onward Europe hanging off it than anywhere else on this list. Munich is the quieter building, and on a tight connection quiet counts for something. From either, the flight carries on to London, Paris, New York or Toronto on the same ticket.
SWISS, Austrian and Brussels Airlines belong to the same group, which Lufthansa’s own destinations page puts plainly: alongside Frankfurt and Munich you also get connections from Brussels, Vienna and Zurich. What baggage allowance comes with a Lufthansa ticket out of Nairobi?
On an intercontinental fare, which is what this is, the fare brand decides it. A Light fare carries no checked bag at all. A full Economy fare carries one of 23kg, Premium Economy two of 23kg, Business two of 32kg and First three, with nothing over 158cm once the three sides are added up. In the cabin you get a personal item plus one bag of up to 8kg, two bags in Business and First. Status can put a free piece back onto a Light fare, but only if it is claimed at the check-in counter.
Is Lufthansa in an alliance, and does Miles & More do anything for me?
Star Alliance. Its own programme is Miles & More, which SWISS uses as well, so flights on either one credit to a single account. Three status levels sit above the base: Frequent Traveller, Senator and HON Circle. Lufthansa's own line is that a Frequent Traveller already enjoys a higher free baggage allowance, while Senator brings the Senator and Star Gold lounges with it. If you hold a card from any Star airline, give us the number before we issue rather than afterwards.
How does a Lufthansa ticket get issued here?
