The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, its stacked limestone blocks floodlit at dusk above the entrance plaza

Destination

Qatar holidaysfrom Nairobi

Souq Waqif after dark, and the inland sea a drive south.

Doha is small enough to hold in your head by the second evening, and that is the argument for it. The museums, the souq, the corniche and the water sit on one stretch of bay, so the days do not need much moving.

Souq Waqif is where the evening happens: restored lanes, tea and shisha at outside tables, the falcon souq alongside. Along the bay, the Museum of Islamic Art stands on its own spit of park, and the National Museum is the desert-rose building, a pile of interlocking discs you photograph before you go in. Both are architecture first and collections second.

Out of the city, the dunes run south to Khor Al Adaid, the inland sea, and that is the day that takes you furthest from the skyline.

Qatar Airways flies Doha to Nairobi direct, which is how most people meet the place: a night either side of somewhere else. It also stands up as the whole trip. A museum morning, a beach afternoon, one desert day and a souq evening is a real week for a family who would rather not fly far.

Qatar is newer on this site than it is on the desk. Doha has been booking steadily here for the next few seasons, which is the useful signal: people from Nairobi keep going back.

Where you’ll go

Souq Waqif. Evening lanes, the falcon souq, and dinner at an outside table.

The museums. The Museum of Islamic Art on the bay, and the National Museum’s desert rose.

The Corniche and West Bay. The waterfront walk, with the towers across the water.

Katara and the Pearl. The cultural village, the marina, and the beach end of the day.

The inland sea. South through the dunes to Khor Al Adaid, and back the same day.

Practical notes

Draft: awaiting owner verification. Indicative only; confirmed in writing with your quote.

  • November to March is the comfortable half of the year. Summer is severe, and priced accordingly.
  • Tell us if your dates fall in Ramadan. Opening hours and the shape of the evening both change, and it is worth planning around.
  • Dress in public leans conservative, with shoulders and knees covered away from hotel pools and beaches.
  • A desert day is a four-wheel-drive day over soft sand. Say early if anyone in the party would rather sit it out.
  • If you are already connecting through Doha, ask about extending the stopover before the through fare is ticketed.
  • Entry requirements are confirmed for your passport before anything is held.

Tipping
A service charge is often already on the bill, so anything on top is yours to judge. Rounding up for a driver or a porter is normal, and small notes travel better than a card.
Tap water
Desalinated and treated to a high standard, though bottled is what most people drink out of habit and taste. Ask your hotel about their supply.

Getting there

The flights for this trip are ticketed at the same desk as the rest of it: Qatar Airways among the 66 airlines we ticket. Ask for the fare when you ask for the trip, and one person holds both.

Why go

Qatar in six lines

  1. Souq Waqif in the evening, and the falcon souq beside it
  2. The Museum of Islamic Art on the bay, and the National Museum's desert rose
  3. The Corniche, with West Bay across the water
  4. Katara Cultural Village, and the beach end of the day at the Pearl
  5. The inland sea at Khor Al Adaid, and the dunes on the way south
  6. Qatar Airways flies direct from Nairobi, so a stopover can become the whole trip
