Experience

Camel Safaris

Walking pace through Laikipia with the camels carrying the camp, and a Samburu guide reading the ground ahead of you.

SeasonDry monthsNorthern Kenya is hot year-round

You mostly walk. The camels carry the water, the tents and lunch, which is what makes the whole thing possible. A fly camp appears each evening in a riverbed you chose that afternoon.

This is northern Kenya: Laikipia, the Karisia hills, the country around Loisaba. The guides are Samburu and their families have handled these animals for generations, so the day comes with a running commentary on tracks, bark, birds and who was here last night. You ride when your legs have had enough.

Nothing about it is fast. That is the reason to do it. Three days of this resets you in a way a vehicle never does.

Good to know

  • Distances are modest, usually a few hours of walking morning and late afternoon with the middle of the day in shade.
  • Fly camps are simple by design: bucket showers, long-drop, dinner by lamplight. The bedding is good.
  • Minimum ages vary by operator and by route. We confirm before you commit.

Route prices, fly-camp inclusions and operator minimum ages for camel safaris in Laikipia and the Karisia hills are set per operator and per route. We confirm what applies to your dates in writing before you pay anything.

Questions we are actually asked

Do you ride the camels or walk?
You mostly walk. The camels carry the water, the tents and lunch, which is what makes a moving camp possible at all, and you ride when you have had enough. Nobody is expected to walk the whole way, and nobody is expected to ride.
How far do you walk in a day?
Distances are modest by design: a few hours in the cool of the morning and a few more in the late afternoon, with the middle of the day spent in shade. The pace is set by the slowest person, not the fittest.
How basic is a fly camp?
Simple on purpose: bucket showers, a long-drop, dinner by lamplight. The bedding is good, which is the part that matters. If you want an en-suite bathroom and a plug socket, this is the wrong trip and we will say so.
Who guides these?
Samburu handlers whose families have worked these animals for generations, walking with a guide who reads tracks, bark and birds as you go. The commentary is the reason to do it on foot rather than from a vehicle.
Where in Kenya does this happen?
The north: Laikipia, the Karisia hills, and the country around Loisaba. It is dry, high and empty, and it looks nothing like the Mara, which is exactly why we put it second on a returning traveller's itinerary rather than first on a new one.
Can children come?
Some routes take them and some do not. Minimum ages vary by operator and by route, and the walking distance matters more than the age on the form. We confirm before you commit.
