Marina Bay After Dark

The waterfront promenade round the bay on foot, a bumboat up the river past the old godowns, the Merlion spitting into the water and the whole skyline coming on at once when the light goes.

Marina Bay is a piece of water with a city arranged around it, and the arrangement is not accidental. Everything faces in. So the correct way to spend the evening is to walk the whole rim of it slowly and let the buildings take turns.

Start at the Merlion while there is still light: a lion’s head on a fish’s body, throwing a jet of water into the bay, and much smaller in person than the photographs promise. Behind it the promenade runs round past the Esplanade, the concert halls that everyone in the city calls the durians, because they are, and then over the Helix Bridge, a double spiral of steel you walk through rather than across.

The far side is where the skyline turns round and looks at you. Three towers with a ship laid across the top of them, the flower-shaped museum on the point, and the whole of the financial district standing on the other bank with its lights coming up in the water. Somewhere in there the show starts, water, light and music thrown out over the bay, and everyone stops walking for it.

Then go inland, onto the river. A bumboat leaves from the bay and putters up between the old godowns of Boat Quay and Clarke Quay, low brick warehouses that used to hold rubber and tin and now hold restaurants, with the bridges going over and the towers standing up behind them. Half an hour, and it explains the geography of the whole city better than any map.

Finish with dinner at the quays, or walk back to a hawker centre for something better. The gardens are on the same water and their own light show runs later, so the two make one long, easy evening on foot.

Good to know

  • Walk anti-clockwise from the Merlion so the light is behind the skyline rather than in your lens.
  • The paving is flat the whole way and lit. This is a genuinely easy evening for most mobility levels.
  • Rain comes hard and briefly. The Esplanade and the malls under the bay are continuous shelter.
  • Show times and last river sailings change. We confirm what is running on your dates.
  • A rooftop with the bay view will want a booking, and sometimes a collared shirt. Say if you want one.
  • Mosquito repellent for standing still by the water after dark.

River boat departure points, running times and last sailings, light and water show timings, and which rooftops require a booking or a dress code are set locally and change. We confirm what applies to your dates in writing before you pay anything.

The city switches on in one go, as though somebody somewhere has a single very large lever.

Where to do it

Where we arrange marina bay after dark

Start from the destination, and we will build the days around this.

Questions we are actually asked

Where should we start?
At the Merlion, with the bay in front of you, and walk anti-clockwise so the sun goes down behind the skyline rather than in your eyes. That puts the Esplanade, the Helix Bridge and the hotel on the far side in the right order, and finishes you near the river.
Is the river boat worth it?
Yes, and half an hour of it reorders the whole city for you. A bumboat runs from the bay up the Singapore River past the restored godowns at Boat Quay and Clarke Quay, which is the trading town the towers were built on top of. Sailing times and last departures change, so we confirm them for your dates.
What about the light show?
There is a water and light show thrown out over the bay in the evening, watched from the open promenade. Times move with the day of the week and the season, and the good standing spots fill well before it starts.
Rooftop bar or street level?
Street level for the city, a rooftop for the photograph. If you want the famous view down onto the bay you are looking at a hotel that will want a booking and may have a dress code, and we arrange that with the rest of the evening rather than leaving it to the door.
