A Day on Sentosa

Over the water by cable car, then whichever Sentosa you came for: Universal Studios for the whole day, or beaches, a boardwalk, an aquarium and a luge run down the hill with the sea in front of you.

Sentosa is the island Singapore keeps its fun on, a short hop off the south coast and connected by more ways than it strictly needs. Take the cable car for the arrival: it lifts off a hill on the mainland, swings out over the container harbour with the whole working port beneath you, and drops you in among the trees on the other side.

Universal Studios is the reason many families come, and it deserves the whole day it takes. It is compact by the standards of these parks, which is in its favour, since you are not walking miles between rides, and the queues behave the way they do everywhere: shortest at opening, worst after lunch. Heights decide what the smaller children can do, and it is worth knowing that before you are standing in the queue for it.

If the park is not the plan, the island itself fills a day easily. The aquarium is one of the good ones, with a window big enough to sit in front of for half an hour. The luge runs down the hillside on a track with the sea in front of you and goes back up on a chairlift. There are three beaches strung along the south shore with a boardwalk joining them, bars and a place to hire a paddleboard, and a viewpoint at the western end where the whole harbour lines up.

The sensible shape is a park day and an island day rather than half of each, and it fits a Singapore stay well: two days out here, and the gardens, the hawker tables and the night safari either side of them.

Good to know

  • Be at the gate for opening. An hour early in the morning is worth three in the afternoon.
  • Ride heights are checked at the queue. Measure at home and avoid the conversation.
  • Swimwear in the bag even on a park day. The beaches are a walk from the gates, not a transfer.
  • Rain is normal and short. Nobody goes home for it.
  • Cable car one way, monorail the other, so the crossing is part of the day rather than a transfer.
  • Opening days, hours and ticket combinations change. We confirm yours in writing before you travel.

Park and attraction opening days and hours, ride height limits, cable-car and monorail arrangements, island admission and which beaches are open for swimming are set locally and change. We confirm what applies to your dates in writing before you pay anything.

You cross to it in a glass box hanging off a wire, which sets the tone honestly enough.

Where to do it

Where we arrange a day on sentosa

Start from the destination, and we will build the days around this.

Questions we are actually asked

Universal Studios, or the rest of the island?
Pick one. The park is a full day on its own and rushing it is a poor use of a ticket; the island version is beaches, the cable car, the aquarium and the luge, and it suits mixed groups and smaller children better. Two days lets you do both properly, and plenty of people give it two.
How do we get across?
Cable car, monorail, or on foot along the boardwalk, and the cable car is the one to do at least once: it leaves from a hill on the mainland and the harbour goes underneath you. We set the arrangements with your itinerary.
Can you swim off the beaches?
The beaches are man-made, sheltered and busy, and the water is warm. Whether swimming is open varies with conditions and the stretch. They are good for a family afternoon and they are not the reason to fly to South-East Asia.
What about the rain?
It arrives hard, usually briefly, and everything keeps running around it. The aquarium and the indoor parts of the park are the obvious shelter, and an hour later the boardwalk is dry again.
