Where they take you from Nairobi

The nonstop out of JKIA, and where their own network carries on beyond it. The underlined places have a page here. We plan the trip, not just the flight.

The nonstop out of NairobiOnward on the airline's own network

Nairobi has three Gulf answers and Etihad is the one people forget to ask for. Abu Dhabi is a nonstop out of JKIA, the same shape of flight as the other two, and on a given set of dates it is worth having all three in front of you before you commit to one. That is what we do with it: we quote it alongside the others rather than instead of them.

Abu Dhabi is also a calmer airport to change planes in. That sounds like a small thing until you are doing it with a tight connection, or with children who have already been awake far longer than anyone planned.

East of the hub the network does the rest. Colombo, Malé, Bangkok, Tokyo and Sydney are all one further stop, which covers most of what people ask us for when they want Sri Lanka or the islands beyond it without three changes of plane.

There is no alliance behind any of this. Etihad belongs to none of the three, so a card from elsewhere earns nothing on the sector and its own programme is the only credit going. If your dates favour Dubai instead, Emirates is ticketed at the same desk and we will tell you so.

Where we use it

These sectors turn up most often in the journeys we build. Each destination page has the rest of the trip on it.

Questions people put to us about this airline

Baggage, alliances and how the ticket actually gets issued. The answers come from what the airline itself publishes, and we confirm what applies to your own fare before you pay.

What baggage allowance comes with an Etihad ticket out of Nairobi?

A journey to or from Nairobi is counted by total weight, not by pieces. You may check as many bags as you like provided the whole lot stays inside your allowance, and no single bag may weigh more than 32kg. The piece rules Etihad publishes belong to its American, Canadian, Tunisian and Moroccan routes, not to this one. Cabin baggage is one bag of up to 7kg at 56 by 36 by 23cm in Economy, or two to a combined 12kg in Business and First. The most restricted economy fares include no checked bag at all.

Etihad is in no alliance. Does that cost me anything?

Only your existing card, and it is worth knowing before you book: Etihad sits outside all three alliances, so a Star Alliance, oneworld or SkyTeam number has nothing to credit here. Its own programme is Etihad Guest. Because this route is weighed rather than counted, the published baggage benefit comes in kilos: Gold members may pick up to 15kg of extra baggage from their menu of choices and Platinum up to 20kg, both on eligible fares, and both chosen rather than automatic. Give us the number before we issue.

How does an Etihad ticket get issued here?

Send the route and the dates and we will price Abu Dhabi beside Dubai and Doha on the same days, because the three Gulf hubs rarely come back in the same order twice and the nonstop out of JKIA is the same length of flight whichever one you choose. The fare and its rules go to you in writing, including what the return locks you into. The ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent. How ticketing works here has the rest.

However this journey is routed, the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent: est. 1994, two offices you can walk into, and a person who answers when a connection drops at six in the morning. How ticketing works here (what happens after you ask, and the questions people put to us before they commit) is set out in full on the flights page.
