The shape of the journey
Ladakh, the Land of High Passes, reached the long way. You start in Manali, among snow-capped peaks and green valleys, and take the road north, halting at Jispa in the Lahaul district of Himachal Pradesh, the road-head for Leh.
Leh sits in a high-altitude desert, with centuries-old monasteries around it. From there, Nubra Valley for its white sand dunes and double-humped Bactrian camels, and Pangong Tso, deep blue and green against the bare mountains.
