Botswana safaris, the Delta and the Kalahari

Water where there should be desert, and the animals that follow it.

Botswana built its safari business around small camps in large private concessions, and the arithmetic shows up in the morning. You find a leopard, you sit with it, and no second vehicle arrives to share the sighting.

The Okavango Delta is the reason most people come. A river that never reaches the sea spreads out across Kalahari sand instead, and the water decides where everything else stands. You travel parts of it in a mokoro, a shallow canoe poled from the stern, and the day slows to the speed of the pole. Camps are water camps, land camps, or both depending on the season, and choosing between them is most of what we do when we plan a Botswana trip.

Chobe is the other half of the country’s reputation: the river, and the elephants that come down to it in the late afternoon. The boats go out at the same hour, which is why the photographs all look like that.

Then the dry half. The Central Kalahari for the space. The Makgadikgadi for the oddness of standing on a lake bed that dried out long before anyone was here to notice.

Botswana runs on light aircraft. Camps sit far apart on tracks that flood, so you hop between airstrips in a small plane with a soft bag and a weight limit, and the Delta goes past underneath. That flight is part of the holiday, not a transfer.

Where you’ll go

The Okavango Delta. Mokoro water, game drives on the islands, and the choice between a water camp and a land camp, which moves with the flood, not the rain.

Moremi Game Reserve. The Delta’s eastern edge, and the reserve most first trips are built around.

Chobe. Elephants and the river, boat cruises in the afternoon, and the closest base to Victoria Falls.

The Central Kalahari. Space, and the reason people come back a second time.

Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans. Salt, horizon, habituated meerkats and the baobabs on Kubu Island.

Kasane sits close enough to the falls that most Botswana trips add them, from either Zimbabwe or Zambia.

Practical notes

Draft: awaiting owner verification. Indicative only; confirmed in writing with your quote.

  • Camps quote high, shoulder and green season separately, and the gap between them is wide.
  • Light-aircraft transfers carry a per-person luggage limit, in soft bags. We confirm the current allowance with your quote.
  • The Delta’s flood and the rains do not line up. Which camp suits which month is a conversation, not a rule.

SIM & data
A TravelNet eSIM, live on landing. Or a Mascom or Orange SIM in Gaborone or Maun with your passport. Camps in the Delta are a different matter, and some have no signal at all.
Tipping
Expected in the camps, never demanded. Most keep a communal box for the team you never meet and your guide is looked after separately. Pula or US dollars both work. Ask us for the sensible range at your camp before you travel.
Tap water
Treated and generally drinkable in the towns. In the Delta and the Kalahari you drink what the camp filters, and they will refill your bottle. Ask your hotel before you drink from the tap.

Comparing countries? The full table puts every destination we plan side by side, and when to go does the same for the months.

Getting there

The flights for this trip are ticketed at the same desk as the rest of it: Ethiopian Airlines among the 66 airlines we ticket. Ask for the fare when you ask for the trip, and one person holds both.

Why go

Botswana in six lines

  1. The Okavango Delta by mokoro, and the choice between a water camp and a land camp
  2. Moremi Game Reserve on the Delta's eastern edge
  3. Chobe, with elephants on the river and boats out in the late afternoon
  4. The Central Kalahari, for space and silence
  5. Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans, habituated meerkats and the baobabs on Kubu Island
  6. Light-aircraft hops between airstrips, which is how the Delta is travelled
