Addis Ababa is one short hop north of Nairobi, and for a certain kind of journey that hop is the whole trick. Ethiopian runs its network through Bole, so the leg out of JKIA is the easy part and everything interesting happens on the other side of it.

Ask a search box for Nairobi to Lagos, Accra, Dakar or Kinshasa and it will either refuse or send you the long way round Europe. Going north first looks wrong on a map and is usually the shortest way to be there the same day. Washington sits on the same list, one stop from here rather than two.

ASKY is the other answer for West Africa, and the two are not strangers: Ethiopian’s own account of itself names Lomé as a hub it runs with ASKY. We price both and tell you which one assembles for your dates.

It flies as Star Alliance, alongside Turkish and Singapore Airlines on this desk, so a card earned on one of them is worth producing here. Closer to home, the one stop over Addis is often what makes southern Africa work from Nairobi, Zimbabwe included.

Where we use it

These sectors turn up most often in the journeys we build. Each destination page has the rest of the trip on it.

Questions people put to us about this airline

Baggage, alliances and how the ticket actually gets issued. The answers come from what the airline itself publishes, and we confirm what applies to your own fare before you pay.

What baggage allowance comes with an Ethiopian Airlines ticket out of Nairobi?

Ethiopian publishes a piece allowance: two checked bags of 23kg each in Economy and three of 23kg in business, or two of 32kg, with nothing over 158cm once length, width and height are added together. It also says plainly that some routes are counted by weight rather than by pieces, so we read the allowance off the fare we are quoting rather than from a table. In the cabin it is one piece of 7kg in Economy and two in business, at 55 by 40 by 23cm.

Is Ethiopian in an alliance, and what does ShebaMiles give me?

It flies as Star Alliance, so a card earned on Turkish, Lufthansa or Singapore Airlines credits here rather than going to waste. Its own programme is ShebaMiles, with four tiers above the entry level: Blue, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Where the ticket is counted in pieces, the extra baggage is 5kg at Blue, one bag of 23kg at Silver, one of 32kg at Gold and two of 23kg at Platinum. Where it is counted by weight, it runs 5, 15, 20 and 32kg instead. Give us the number before we issue.

How does an Ethiopian Airlines ticket get issued here?

Send the route and roughly when. The Nairobi sector is the straightforward half; the half worth thinking about is the flight out of Addis, because that is where a routing either holds together or costs you a night. The fare and its rules come back to you in writing, and the whole journey is issued in Nairobi as one ticket by an IATA-accredited agent, which keeps a late first leg the airline's problem rather than yours. How ticketing works here has the rest.

However this journey is routed, the ticket is issued in Nairobi by an IATA-accredited agent: est. 1994, two offices you can walk into, and a person who answers when a connection drops at six in the morning. How ticketing works here (what happens after you ask, and the questions people put to us before they commit) is set out in full on the flights page.
