Overview

The shape of the journey

Northern Tanzania is the standard circuit and most people drive it. SkySafari flies it instead, on its own nine-seat aircraft, which converts the long transfer days into short hops and hands the difference back as time in the parks.

Every bed is an Elewana Collection property, so the standard holds from the coffee farm outside Arusha to the crater rim. Three nights at Tarangire Treetops in the baobabs, three in the Serengeti, either Pioneer Camp in the south when the herds are calving or Migration Camp when they are on the move, and two at The Manor above Ngorongoro.

There is an eight-day version of the same route if you have less time. It visits the same four places on a tighter count of nights.

Where you'll stay

The camps and hotels

Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge

Plantation-style houses scattered across a working coffee farm outside Arusha. The first night and the last.

Elewana Tarangire Treetops

Suites raised into the branches of the baobabs, in a private conservancy bordering Tarangire National Park.

Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp

Bygone-era tents in the southern Serengeti, the right camp when the wildebeest are calving and Lake Magadi has its flamingos.

Elewana Serengeti Migration Camp

Stilted suites positioned for the annual passage of the herds. SkySafari puts you in whichever of the two Serengeti camps suits the season.

Elewana The Manor

Cape Dutch-styled cottages placed for forays into the Ngorongoro Crater, and the most comfortable stop on the circuit.

Day by day

How the days run

A proposal, not a timetable. The routing, timings and inclusions are confirmed in writing before you pay anything.

  1. Day 1

    Arusha

Fast-tracked through arrivals at Kilimanjaro International and given a VIP transfer to Arusha Coffee Lodge. If your flight lands early there is time for the Shanga workshop before dinner.

  2. Day 2Flight

    On to Tarangire

The first SkySafari flight, out to the private conservancy on Tarangire's border. Treetops is exactly what the name says, and the first game activity goes out in the afternoon.

  3. Day 3

    Tarangire

Elephant, baobabs, and the tree-climbing lions the park is known for. A full day, with the conservancy's own activities available as well as the park.

  4. Day 4

    Tarangire, again

Three nights here is deliberate. The park empties of vehicles as the day goes on and the last hour is the best of it.

  5. Day 5Flight

    Into the Serengeti

The flight north-west onto the plains. Which camp you land at depends on the season, and SkySafari makes that call rather than leaving you in the wrong half of the park.

  6. Day 6

A full day on the plains

The Serengeti at its own scale. Predators, herbivores in numbers that stop meaning anything, and horizon in every direction.

Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp or Elewana Serengeti Migration CampAll meals

  7. Day 7

    The Serengeti, again

Out early, back through the middle of the day, out again at four. Three nights is what makes the second and third days worth having.

Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp or Elewana Serengeti Migration CampAll meals

  8. Day 8Flight

    To the crater

The flight to Ngorongoro and up to The Manor. The temperature drops noticeably on the way up; bring something warm for the evening.

    Elewana The ManorAll meals

  9. Day 9

    Into the Ngorongoro Crater

A full day on the crater floor, which is the reason the last two nights are here. An enclosed ecosystem, and the density of game in it is unlike anywhere else on the circuit.

  10. Day 10Flight

    Back to Arusha

The last SkySafari flight, back to Arusha for your onward connection.
