Overview

The shape of the journey

Angama sells nights, not itineraries, so this is a stay rather than a route: four nights at Angama Mara on the escarpment above the Maasai Mara, priced per guest per night, with the first two children under twelve staying as the lodge's guests. The rate assumes two adults and two children sharing.

What makes it work for families is the private vehicle. Game drives run when your children are ready rather than when the camp is, and if the afternoon collapses you go back. Between drives there is a proper roster of things for them to do, and childminding from six to ten in the evening so that dinner belongs to the adults again.

The same offer runs at Angama Amboseli and at the four-tent Angama Safari Camp in the Mara Triangle, both of which also take families. Ask us and we will price the alternative.

Where you'll stay

The camps and hotels

Angama Mara

Two camps of tented suites high on the Great Rift Valley wall above the Mara. Two sets of interconnecting suites in each camp, enclosed passageways between them, and under-twelves can share with you on a triple set-up.

Day by day

How the days run

A proposal, not a timetable. The routing, timings and inclusions are confirmed in writing before you pay anything.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive at Angama Mara

You come up onto the escarpment and the Mara opens out a thousand feet below. Rooms are tented suites with floor-to-ceiling glass at the front and a deck; the interconnecting pairs are the family ones. An afternoon drive if there is light, or the view and nothing else.

  2. Day 2

    Out with the guides

Your own vehicle and your own guide, which on a family safari is the whole difference. Angama's guides are used to children and pitch the day accordingly. Back when you have had enough, not when the schedule says.

  3. Day 3

    The Shamba, and the kitchen

A morning on the lodge's vegetable garden: the scavenger hunt, the greenhouse, the worm farm, the bug hotel, the chickens out to the compost and back, with an apron of your own to take home. Or into the kitchen with the baker to make something the family eats that evening.

  4. Day 4

A warrior, and the beading studio

A morning or afternoon walking with a Maasai warrior: the plants, the remedies, and rather more information about animal droppings than anyone expected. Later, the Maasai Mamas in the beading studio will teach you their work, and you keep what you make.

  5. Day 5

    Depart

A last morning on the deck, and the photographs from your shoot to take with you.
