Overview

The shape of the journey

Conservancies sell privacy better than reserves do, which is the whole case for spending a honeymoon on them. Three nights in Kalama, where the nearest other vehicle is usually several ridges away, then a flight south for three in Mara North. Honeymoon suite at each end, subject to availability.

Saruni Basecamp will move you up to Saruni Samburu, Saruni Wild or Saruni Leopard Hill at the relevant supplement if you want the grander rooms. There is also a standing bride's offer: half price for the bride on a minimum four nights split two and two across two camps, in mid and high season.

Where you'll stay

The camps and hotels

Basecamp Samburu

An eco-built camp in 200,000 acres of private conservancy, with Mt Ololokwe in the view and the Samburu National Reserve a drive away. Star beds for the nights you would rather sleep outside.

Saruni Mara

A small lodge in indigenous forest rather than out on the plain, so the arrival feels like a different country again. A Wellbeing Space, a fire, and the conservancy beyond the trees.

Day by day

How the days run

A proposal, not a timetable. The routing, timings and inclusions are confirmed in writing before you pay anything.

  1. Day 1Flight

    Nairobi, then north

Met at Jomo Kenyatta and driven to Wilson for the morning flight to Samburu, about an hour. Your guide meets the aircraft and either runs you straight to camp or turns the transfer into your first drive. Kalama in the afternoon, sundowners with a long view.

  2. Day 2

The Samburu Special Five, then just the two of you

An early drive into the Samburu National Reserve for the northern species: reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, plus the elephant herds along the river. Picnic lunch, a massage, then a private sundowner drive with a bottle of champagne on ice. Dinner is lantern-lit on your own verandah.

  3. Day 3

A third day in the north

Out early with a picnic breakfast, back for lunch. The afternoon is a drive or nothing at all, whichever you would rather, and there is an optional night drive after dinner.

  4. Day 4Flight

    Fly to the Mara

The morning flight south, about ninety minutes, then a transfer into Mara North or Naboisho with a game drive built into it. Time at the lodge, an exclusive afternoon drive, and dinner with the conservancy making its noises outside.

  5. Day 5

    Walking, or the high ground

A walk through the valleys with your Maasai guide, or a drive up to a hilltop for the view over the whole ecosystem. More conservancy in the afternoon. Weather allowing, dinner is outside, with singing round the fire.

  6. Day 6

First light, and a slow afternoon

An early drive with breakfast set up under an acacia or beside the river, hippos permitting. Back for a massage and an afternoon that asks nothing of you. A late drive, then sundowners over the plains.

    Saruni MaraAll meals

  7. Day 7Flight

    Depart

The rhino sanctuary on the way to the airstrip if you want it, entry payable there. The Mara flight leaves at 11:00 and lands in Nairobi at 12:20, and a Saruni Basecamp vehicle takes you on to Jomo Kenyatta.
