Overview

The shape of the journey

Nine nights, three landscapes, and a light aircraft doing the work a two-day drive would otherwise do. Samburu in the arid north, the Mara in the south-west, and Lumo on the Tsavo plains with Kilimanjaro behind it. The Soroi Collection has a camp in each, so nothing changes hands between legs.

Three nights in each place is the difference between this and the Collection's shorter circuits. It is long enough to have a day that does nothing, which on a ten-day safari matters more than people expect.

The published rate is USD 11,415 per person sharing in low season with four travelling, and USD 12,135 with two, both including park fees, which is unusual and worth noticing when you compare quotes.

Where you'll stay

The camps and hotels

Soroi Larsen's Camp

Twelve tents, two family tents and two deluxe suites with star beds, all facing the Ewaso Nyiro. A spa, a photographic hide, and the northern species on the far bank.

Soroi Luxury Migration Camp

A small camp in lion and leopard country, minutes from the Olkiombo airstrip but far enough off it to stay quiet. Extended game drives with picnic meals carried out during the migration.

Soroi Lions Bluff Lodge

Twelve rooms on a hilltop above Lumo, looking across to Kilimanjaro. A heated infinity pool for the sundowner, a photo hide, and the Taita community nearby.

Day by day

How the days run

A proposal, not a timetable. The routing, timings and inclusions are confirmed in writing before you pay anything.

  1. Day 1Flight

    Nairobi, then Samburu

A scheduled flight from Wilson north to Samburu, and a transfer to Larsen's on the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro. Settle in; the reserve is on the other side of the river and it will still be there in the morning.

  2. Day 2

    Samburu's northern species

Two game drives, morning and afternoon, in open 4x4s. Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and beisa oryx are all here and none of them are in the Mara. The photographic hide is open between drives, and there are hot and cold bitings at the fire every evening.

  3. Day 3

    A second full day

More of the same, which is the point: two drives, the river, the hide, and enough time for the spa or a star bed. The reserve rewards a second day in a way it cannot on a one-night stop.

  4. Day 4Flight

    Fly to the Maasai Mara

South by air to the Mara and on to the Migration Camp. The open plains after Samburu's rock and riverbed are a genuine shock, and the day ends with the camp's Out of Africa sundowner set up on the savannah.

  5. Day 5

    Cats, and time

An extended game drive out and back with everything you need carried along. This is prime lion and leopard country; in migration season the picnic meals go out with you because you will not want to come back for lunch.

  6. Day 6

    A second Mara day

Two more drives, afternoon tea between them, and the fire in the evening. Nothing is scheduled that cannot be moved if a sighting is worth staying for.

  7. Day 7Flight

    Fly east to Lumo

A flight from the Mara to Taita Hills and a transfer to Lions Bluff, on its ridge above the Lumo Community Wildlife Sanctuary. An afternoon drive, then a sundowner from the infinity pool with the whole conservancy below it.

  8. Day 8

    Lumo, and the night shift

Full-day game drives across 600 square kilometres of community land between the Taita Hills and Tsavo West. A night drive or a sunset safari is included, which is where the animals you have not seen yet turn up.

  9. Day 9

    Kilimanjaro, weather allowing

A last full day: the hide, the Taita community nearby, another drive, and the 30-minute massage that comes with the stay, taken in your room with the mountain in front of you if it is out.

  10. Day 10Flight

    Depart

A scheduled flight from Lumo to Wilson, then the transfer across Nairobi to Jomo Kenyatta for your international departure.
